About Lake Chapala

The majority of Americans, Canadians and Europeans who reside at "The Lakeside" live in the North West quadrant of the lakeshore. This 40 km stretch runs from San Juan Tecomatlan in the East, to Jocotepec in the West. It embraces the communities of Chapala, San Antonio Tlayacapan, Ajijic and San Juan Cosala.

About 7,000 foreigners are full-time residents of the lakeside, while a similar number are part-time residents (estimated numbers). Part-time residents include 'snowbirds' from the northern USA and Canada in the winter months and 'sunbirds' from the Southern USA in the summer months.

Average high temperatures at the lakeside range from 29 degrees Celsius in May to 22 degrees in Dec/Jan. Average lows range from 17 degrees in May to 11 degrees in Dec/Jan.

Following are recommended on-line references for those seeking more information.

Organizations

The Canadian Club of Lake Chapala
This is a very functional information and reference Web site. It is a particularly useful source of information for foreign residents of Mexico in general and Lake Chapala in particular; or those who wish to move to Mexico. The "Immigration" section is comprehensive and well researched. If you are interested in the Mexican Health Care System (Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social or IMSS), go to the "Medical" section. There is a good description of the system.

The "Utilities" section is also a good reference for Telephone, Electricity, Propane gas and Water Utilities.

Other recommended sections are "English Language Churches" (14 listed), "Associations/Clubs" (almost 50 listed), and the "Emergency" section.

The Lake Chapala Society
The LCS has over 3,800 members. Members come from 24 countries, however, the vast majority are American and Canadian. Go to the web site to see the basket of services and benefits available though membership.

The "Lakeside Living" and "Legal" sections of the LCS Web site are particularly useful.
